Prologue: Beginnings a New World
Before Columbus there were rumors by others
that the Vikings tried to settle Vineland and died.
There was the legend of Atlantis lost beneath the ocean.
The Greeks even had their legend of the Lotus Eaters.
Back then the world was split by two super powers.
A Papal Grant gave half the world to Portugal,
and granted the other half of the world to Spain.
All signed by the holiest of the ultimate authorities.
Isabelle wanted to reach across the uncertain Ocean,
to voyage to the East Indies to bring back the spices
and riches of far eastern places,
to break the Portuguese black ship monopoly.
Columbus did not realize, could not know,
how this long sea voyage, to skirt around,
to try to out smart, the Portuguese and Papal claim
would change the world forever to this day.
The British soon learned of their success:
to cross the ocean, to riches on the other side.
They sailed across the short distance and arrived;
the cost was high, and counted by many lives.
Europeans sailed, settled, stayed, and survived.
French and Spanish footholds filled with sand.
Indians soon vanished: smallpox, measles, all slaughtered.
Dutch and English settlements; northern colonists survived.
All owned by a King in a far away land.
the King’s Law no one else’s, no rights of ownership.
The King stayed home, his soldiers stayed here.
Taxation, Sedition, Revolution, Evolution.
New Found Freedoms
A Declaration, a Constitution, a Bill of Rights.
The rights of a man to protect and own property,
to limit State Power, the Articles of Confederation.
A country of separate but equal states, no union.
How quickly grows a nation built on liberty.
First Louisiana, and then Alaska purchased.
Texas left behind Mexico and joined after the Alamo.
Around the cape to California, and don’t forget the Oregon Trail.
John Brown ahead of his time, “We are all Brothers.”
The man raved against Slavery in the Freedom Land.
Blood, gore, civil war, bodies piled high by four score.
Inhumanity, insanity, entomb the dead in mass graves.
Finally, united by the blood spent through the wounds of ordinary men,
the truth is “All men are created equal.”
All the immigrants fled some king’s rule for a promise.
The cost of FREEDOM is high, and counted by many lives.
Many dictators have ruled elsewhere. Never one here.
They all make the same promise,
“Give up your freedom.
Trust my rule, and do not question,
for I know better then you.”
All grow old, and have short reigns
with broken promises.
Men are fools.
The truth is:
Kings and Queens and Dictators,
by any name may live in grandeur,
and have grand schemes.
But they all die.
Real FREEDOM is the idea
“All men are created equal.”
Never surrender FREEDOM for promises and lies.
Columbus came across the ocean
searching for riches.
Instead, he discovered a New World
vastly different from the Old World he left behind.
An old world ruled only for the few.
Now, a New World based on a man’s worth.
Yours and mine.
The Man Not Forgotten
A thought, a Man, an Ideal.
A country split North to South.
Bitterness, two worlds clash
The tall thin Man said,
“All Men are Created Equal
Even the slaves.”
Young men died
To many battle fields.
A surgeon’s tent, gangrene,
Two Generals turned
A skirmish into a major battle
Laid waste to many.
The Gettysburg Address.
Southern States decimated.
A slow ride to the signing table.
A sword turned over.
The Headlines read:
Lincoln is Dead.
The Nation wept.
His Ideals live on.
See his Memorial.
At the Turn of the Century
Trudge to work every day in 1900,
twelve and fourteen hour days.
No over time, no hourly,
straight time by the day.
No vacations, no holidays, no sick time,
work all the time.
Company Stores, Company Houses,
Work all the time, every single day,
the Work Ethic rules.
Work to eat. Work to breath.
Oh! Strong handed workers.
No need to read. No need to write.
Work all day, return at night.
No place for a smart man,
Nobody was supposed to think.
To dangerous, get rid of him
at the end of the week.
The foreman’s brother is out of work.
He takes your job.
Tough! Your on the street.
Your family has nothing to eat.
The owner’s nephew takes his job,
only to advance in one day.
Up the Corporate ladder he climbs:
No longer just a hired hand.
Not long working with his hands.
Now! The foreman.
Now! The plant manager.
Now! The new owner.
The new owner says:
“There is no room in this company
for lazy men.
Just take a look at me;
I worked my way up
to own this company.”
Like you, the foreman,
and his brother
are now on the streets.
Once a job, Yesterday.
Now! No jobs, Today.
All were taken away.
Only the new owner profited,
while you worked
all through the day.
When you got old
you went away,
and the new owner never had to pay.
Just Slap Their Wrists
Oh the naughty children
who have become rich or famous.
How many of them are corrupted
by the world around them?
Losing their perspectives on:
ethics, crime, right and wrong.
The bankers, lawyers, politicians,
and real estate brokers
always making headlines
for their gross improprieties.
Who amongst them still remains honest ?
Are there any left ?
A total lack of political integrity;
a banker’s confidence lost.
The rich, now famous, on trial for
“White Collar Crimes ”.
Is this how they became so rich?
By graft and racketeering ?
How honest and noble;
socially mobile they once seemed.
Now, hire the best to wheel
and deal in a Judge’s Chambers;
Technicality, improper evidence,
bargain for a lighter sentence.
White wash, cover up,
all of the complexities of the law.
Each and everyone of them smug
in knowledge of the legal clause.
Point out the exact wording,
there’s a comma. It is no crime.
How can the meaning of the law
depend so much on commas?
When did ETHICS take a back seat
to money, and to power ?
Is justice only an illusion
taken advantage of by children ?
